d2 Incompetent You might know where the “on” button is.
d4 Novice You might remember to disengage the safety first.
d6 Competent If you don’t know it, you can probably fake it.
d8 Expert You’ve put some effort into knowing your stuff.
d10 Professional You’re probably the best in the room.
d12 Master You’re a leading expert.
d12+ Supreme Everyone else is playing catch-up.

Each skill roll is accompanied by a related Attribute, depending on the type of task at hand. For example, using Athletics to dodge would require Agility; to climb, Strength; to run through a minefield, Intelligence. It may well be possible to make an unusual combination depending on the situation and the character involved; for instance, a character trained in Scientific Expertise/Mathematics might be allowed to use an Intelligence + Perception/Gambling roll to count cards, rather than the more standard Awareness.

Each skill is accompanied by the suggested specialties in the book; if you don’t see the right specialty, then let me know and we can make stuff up.

If a skill is labeled “Skilled only” then you must purchase points in it to use it at all. Otherwise, you simply use your base Attribute (whichever is appropriate for the situation) when using an untrained skill.
